A Brief History of Liberty Elementary
Liberty Elementary is the oldest school existing on an original site in Murray. The first structure was built in 1874 as state District #24 School, replaced in 1893 by the Winchester School and then renamed Liberty School in a 1905 student naming contest when a new three-story brick building on sandstone foundation was completed about the same time as the formal organization of the Murray City School District. The school received the addition of 10 rooms in 1957; 5 classrooms, the office and gym in 1964. The oldest building section was demolished in 1988.
The school received an addition of a 10-room building in 1957; then five classrooms, an office and a gym in 1964. The old three-story building was demolished in 1988, and a new wing was constructed onto the remaining newer section. Many subsequent upgrades and remodels have been undertaken since to ensure safety and comfort at the school.
The historic heritage of this legacy school moves forward with enthusiasm and excitement as Liberty Elementary school and community spirit remains strong!
